The Challenge
Ipswich SHS is located in a flood-prone area and has no suitable site for a Performing Arts Building near the campus’s existing buildings. The chosen site was in the flood zone and some distance from most schools’ assets. Once we understood the likely flood level of the site, it was clear that this building would be raised well above the rest of the school. The sheer size of the building, the requirements for equitable access and the complexity of the specialist auditorium made this a challenging project.
The school has been through several complex expansion projects in recent years. Identifying and responding to concerns raised by the school and regional infrastructure advisor was essential to ensure we met all stakeholder requirements.
The Solution
The design team worked closely with us and the school on several options before settling on the final design.
The design team engaged a specialist lighting and audio-visual consultant (Design Stage Pty Pty) to ensure we provided all the infrastructure and services needed for a functional Performing Arts Building. Their expertise was crucial, providing valuable foresight during design and ensuring seamless integration when the system was commissioned.
The builder had not constructed a performing arts building in Queensland before this one, so we worked collaboratively with the builder during the construction and defect period. The result is amazing, delivering a Performance Stage, Dance Studio, 2 Drama Spaces, Dressing Rooms, Makeup Room, 2 Multi-Media Rooms, 2 Music Classrooms, Staff Room, Ensemble Studio and 4 Practice Rooms, Stores, Amenities, Foyer, Box Office/Kiosk.
Facilities like this enhance the school and provide exceptional opportunities for emerging Creatives.
